Default RealAudio Streaming - Anyone get it to work?

    Hey All,

I have a VPS package and I am trying to get RealAudio files to stream, but have been unsuccessful. I did install the streaming RealServer via the Control Panel, and I have followed the tutorial through the support page, as well as calling tech support. My files not only don't stream, but don't even open.

I put a "pointer" file (.ram), uploaded in ASCII mode, into the folder where the site is. I tried putting them both in the /var/streaming/ folder and created a "realaudio" folder in /var/www/html/ , without success. Is there a specific/different folder I should be putting the ".ra" files (realaudio) files in?

Please help, I have a customer that NEEDS this to work ASAP.

    Thank you,
    Anthony

I've been streaming audio here for some years and its never been a problem. I set it up some years back so I don't remember too much what i did, but yes, it does work here.

You don't really give enough details to help you. Are there any error messages? What does it mean "the files don't stream"? Do you have an example link?

    jalal,

Here's the site I am working on: http://www.hagaishaham.com

The audio page has the RealPlayer links that I can't seem to get to work. Is there a specific folder I should have all the files in? The site above is a secondary domain, too. I think this is compounding the problem.

I'm also wondering if this is because we have RealServer 7 installed on the server, which is quite old. Is there anything special I need to do to format the files for RS7?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is it possible to install Helix Basic Server somehow? I haven't ever installed any "3rd party applications", but Helix Basic Server is free & will play up to RealPlayer 10 files.

    Jalal,

Do you have an example of a streaming file that works on one of your sites? I can usually figure out what's wrong just by checking out someone else's setup. I can't even get the link to the .ram file in my audio folder to work.

Here is the current setup (I have tried many):

I have the ".ram" pointer file in my secondary domain's (hagaishaham.com) "audio" folder. For some reason, links to this file give me a 404 error, but I know the file is there.

I have the ".ram" file set up to point to my ".ra" (realaudio) file, which is located in a folder called "realaudio" in my main domain (operadesigns.com). I thought that when you install the RealServer, it creates the folder where the files are supposed to reside, but WH had me create the "realaudio" folder in my main domain.

Here is my ".ram" file contents:
    Code:
    rtsp://operadesigns.com/realaudio/shaham_erez_kreutzer_mvmnt1.ra
I first tried using the .ra file as a .rm (realmedia) to no avail, and I have also tried putting the file in my /var/streaming/ folder (also to no avail).

According to the installation instructions on another host, found here, it sounds like I should be able to use this suggestion to test whether or not the RealServer is installed:

To make sure that RealServer is running correctly, connect to the RealSystem Administrator using the following URL:

    http://YOUR-DOMAIN.NAME:4574/admin/index.html

"4574" is the default setting for the RealSystem Administrator port. If you chose a different port number while running the setup utility, you will need to substitute that number.

From the menu you should see on the left, choose "Samples". If you have already installed a RealPlayer on your own computer, you can then attempt to play one of the sample Real Media clips.
But, that unfortunately gives me nothing--just a connection error when it tries to connect to port 4574.

Please let me know if you need more information.

    Thanks again,
    Anthony

Are you sure that you have the .ram files uploaded to /audio directory? Have you tried putting the .ram files in the same realaudio directory as the .ra files on operadesigns.com? Where is your second domain pointed to in relataion to the root of your account? i.e. is it /var/www/html/somedirectory It could be you could get a clue of what is needed by looking at your httpd.conf file. It is possible that you need to add support for the real audio mime type for the second domain. Still going to the (http://www.hagaishaham.com/audio/sha...zer_mvmnt1.ram) should not return a Not Found 404 if the file is there even if you need to ad support for the mime type which is why I started with question of if you are sure the file is there. I have thought I've uploaded files to the server in the past and spent hours trying to figure out the problem only to realize I had not uploaded the file or it was uploaded to a different directory.

This is the basic error, first you need to solve this and then we can move on to the next problem.

When I try to go to the http://www.hagaishaham.com/audio/ directory I get a 403 Forbidden error, so is it possible you have some .htaccess file keeping people out???

I didn't have an .htaccess file in there, but no matter what I do, I can't get the browser to recognize files in the "audio" folder. Maybe it's a reserved name or something? On a whim, I decided to change the folder name to "media" and now all the pointer files (.ram) seem to be working properly. I added an htaccess (temporarily) so the directory will list--the files seem to run fine directly from the "/media/" folder.

However, I still can't get the links on the audio page to work, which I did change to the media folder. If you click through the links, you'll only get 404 page not found errors. Should I link directly to the ".ra" file using "rtsp://" instead of "http://"?

I just did a test of a ram file that I uploaded to one of my sites and all works as expected. http://wildjokerdesign.com/soundtest.ram

It is a plain text file with this in it:
    Code:
    rtsp://operadesigns.com/realaudio/shaham_erez_kreutzer_mvmnt1.ra
I have looked at your set up and such a couple times and all seems to be right. I can't figure what may be keeping your links from working.
