Default FTP to web site - Other User? (Newbie)

I want to allow one of my Users to FTP his files to his web directory. It's not working.

I'm hosting my brother's site. His files are at /var/www/html/brother

His remote host settings in Dreamweaver MX are:

    FTP host: ftp.mydomain.com
    Host directory: /var/www/html/brother
    Login: brother@mydomain.com
    Password: his email password
    'Use passive ftp' is checked.

    Permissions on 'brother' are drwxr-xr-x.

I have no idea what is wrong. Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you enable FTP when you set up his user account via the Site Manager?

Just checked one of my user setups in DW 4 an older version and in it the settings are like this:

    FTP host: mydomain.com
    Host directory: /var/www/html/brother
    Login: brother
    Password: email password
    'Use passive ftp' is un-checked.

So no leading ftp, no @domain and the 'Use Passive ftp' is not checked.

    Give those a try.

    Thanks for your fast responses!

First, yes, FTP was enabled. But his home directory was set as /ftp/pub/brother.

So I tried to change it to /var/www/html/brother but got the error "Failed to rename directory"

Then I tried to change it to /www/html/brother and it accepted that. But without /var/, that directory isn't online. Right?

Second, I tried your ideas for the DW user setup. No luck. "An FTP error occurred - cannot open folder - access denied - the file may not exist (but I know it does!) or there could be a permission problem.

I'm leaning toward the permission problem.... thanks again

A weird thing ... I've also set up an alias for him and a directory inside brother: /var/www/html/brother/alias.

When he logs into that directory with alias@mydomain.com -- it works.

But he can't log into /var/www/html/brother with alias@ or brother@

    Hmm

I'm tempted to delete the user 'brother' and recreate it. Any reason (besides emails bouncing for the next 30 seconds) I shouldn't?

    I claim ignorance on dreamweaver.

I do recommend you delete user "brother" and recreate, enabling ftp and setting ftp home dir to /var/www/html/brother (check directory already exists).
I say this because changing that ftp dir seems to create problems in sm.

Using whatever FTP, login name will be "brother", password whatever, and host will be mydomain.com

at least that works for me :-)

Well, I deleted the user 'brother' and recreated it -- and it worked.

Thanks everyone! This was my first experience with this forum and I'm thrilled. Many thanks.
