    Default Email lost in transaction ?

    Hi, I would like to know if I just sent out a mail from my Outlook & it registered it on my sent box - so while travelling to the server halfway the server shutsdown for some reason or another .
    Will my mail be lost in the scenario above, cause I;ve got a situation where the sender said he sent it while the recipient said I did not receive it.

    I had another situation the other day, when my norton antiv finished scanning the email & was sending it - then a failure sign showed up from norton poped up notifying me that there was a connection failure to the server but the mail is already in my sent box.

    On my email client (and I think on most) the email doesn't get moved to the sent box until the mail server has confirmed receipt of it.

    Thats often the case as mentioned, but after the server receives it, within that split second the server stops & restarts , surely the email has been lost... hope this is a rarity

    I don't understand.

    The email server receives it, that means it has been saved to disk and logged. Then it replies to the email client that it has been successfully received. The email client then moves it to the Sent mail box.
    Ergo: if it is in the Sent box, then it has been successfully received!

    You can turn on mail logging and find out what happens if you are really curious, but my suspicion is that the recipient has trapped it as spam and that is where it has disappeared to.

    Thanks, this email issue of ppl not receiving it has always been the issue.

    Technically it can be traced, but probaly my case is probaly a human error..thanks anyway. Jalal

    Of late I constantly get for my email the error:
    Your SMTP server has not responded for 60 seconds.

    So what could possibly be the problem ?

    I will now try to turn on both email & procmail logging to see what's the problem..

    Would like to ask - are those 2 settings resource intensive ?

    For FTP logging, - it will log who from where has logged in & downloaded what right ?

    Logging does of course take some resources... but you must keep it in perspective. If you are dealing with thousands of emails per hour, then you may have a problem and you should be careful with the logging. Otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.

    Just don't forget and leave it turned on! Or if you do leave it turned on, then make sure that you have logrotate set up to deal with them somehow.

    Thank goodness you reminded me about the logrotate conf thing..
