Thread: Two cPanels?

    Default Two cPanels?

I just purchased a new cPanel hosting plan. The welcoming email seems to list two cPanels:

One called WestHost Control Panel, with a URL of http://cp.westhost.com, which I can log in to ok.

Another one called cPanel Shared Hosting Service Information, with a different username and password. The email doesn't give a URL for this one. Sorry if all this elementary but I'm mystified as to what this is, how to get into it, and whether I should be trying to get into it. Help please!

    John,

cPanel can be reached in several ways, but the easiest is to simply log into the cp.westhost.com. Open up the top Manage tab and click on the cPanel icon. You should also be able to reach cPanel via cpanel.example.com where example.com is of course replaced by your domain.

There is yet one more way to access it but there is a chance that this option could fail somewhere down the line if the moved things around. In cPanel itself when you are logged in there is a Shortcut icon under Preferences. If you click on it you get two links that can be dragged to either your desktop or your browser's bookmarks toolbar. In fact there is also a link there for your webmail access. The problem that can arise with these two, is that they are linked directly to the server your account is on. If for some reason they need to move your account to a new server the links would no longer work.

Now if you really like haveing those desktop or browser toolbar shortcuts, you can make your own or modify the ones those two links make to point to the dynamic links. Again the dynamic link for cPanel is cpanel.example.com. On either shortcut you simply right click then go to Properties and you can see where you can edit the url. The dynamic url for your Webmail is webmail.example.com.

    Thanks Shawn.

Are http://cp.westhost.com > Manage > cPanel and http://cpanel.example.com two routes to exactly the same place, or to two separate places? (Provided I log into each with my credentials of course).

Yeah, they do go to the same place. We just wanted a place (cp.westhost.com) to have one login and access your account info. It is also good to have the other available if your working with a designer/developer and only want to give them access to cPanel and not your whole account.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that Jake, it puts my mind at rest.

    Jake,

You know it had not dawned on my why there where two sets of log in credentials and in fact I had kind of thought to myself "Why didn't WestHost just make them the same?". Now it all makes sense!
