Question php, mail, and ps ax

    Newbie mail question:

If I do ps ax from the command line, I do not see a mail daemon.

If I do mailq, I get expected output. So presumably a mail service is running.

If I use php's mail() function, it works fine. So again, a mail service is running.

So why doesn't it show in the ps list? How can I verify what exactly is running, how can I start/stop if necessary, etc?

Did some googling and search on forums, and didn't come up with a whole lot, so if there is a resource you can point me to, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Andy

Sendmail is not really running just under our individual accounts which is why we don't have as much control over it like you would if it was a dedicated server or a true VPS. We do have individual installations of things like PHP, Apache, MySQL so we see those things when running ps aux. Also if I remember correct Sendmail is not running as daemon so is not really always "on".

Ah yes. That makes sense. Sometimes I get to thinking "root-like" is root. Thanks for your reply.
