Default Need help adding an form to my page

I am completely lost as to how to add a form to my page. Due to the fact that I have been receiving thousands of SPAM e-mails to several e-mail addresses listed on my contact page, I have decided to just changes the page to a form. I would like install a form for customers to ask their questions through that goes to my e-mail address. I do know a good bit of HTML, but know nothing about scripts, etc. Can anyone send me to a helpful site that will walk me through the process? Thanks! HellaTees

West Host offers a program called FormMail that you can install via the Site Manager. It is pretty easy to use once you have it installed. You simply create the form normally in HTML and point it to the script. There is information in the script itself that details the added hidden fields that you can use in the form to control certain things.

There is also a version of the one WestHost supplies called NMS FormMail that can be found here: http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/ Many users prefer to use it . On that same site you can find a script called TFMail which is a hybrid of the orginal script that gives you more options for controlling the output and look of the script.

All the scripts are documented in the script itself with comments and you can read these by opening them up in a plain text editor.

BTW if you continue to use the same email addresses you'll still get spam simply because they already have those emails. You would need to change the email addresses you use.

Default Thanks to both of you!

Just wanted to thank both of you for your responses. I am trying to read through all of this information-- hopefully without getting to confused. I really am totally inexperienced with scripts, so it is like going back to when I learned HTML years ago. I may be back with more questions though.

Also, thanks for pointing out that I will still receive the SPAM if I used the same e-mail addresses. I have already deleted most of the old addresses and plan to start a new one used only for this form. But I certainly do appreciate that information, on a bad day I may not have real;ized that.

    Thanks,
    Angela

    Default one more question

Thanks to your help and a lot of studying I now have an e-mail for on my website. I do have one question though. On the FormMail.pl (the page that my customer sees after filling out my form) I would really like to know how to change the background color, and the font style and color to better match the rest of my website. I am not at all familiar with perl or scripts. I only know good old HTML. I thik if I understand correcty, it uses an array to define these things. If anyone can send me a suggestion I would be grateful. I guess it is time to go back to school or find a good tutorial site to get up to date.

    Thanks,
    Angela

The easiest thing for you to do is set this hidden form fields:
    Code:
     <input type=hidden name="redirect" value="http://yourdomain.com/to/file.html">
If you set that field it well return them to the page you specify instead of the output that the script generates. This is just one of the reasons I like using the TFMail program at MMS instead of the one that WestHost provides. The other reason is that with TFMail you do not have to put the email address you are sending to in the form. It is possible that spammers could still pick up and harvest the email you have in the hidden field.

TFMail can take some time to figure out but it is well worth exploring. The Auto installer listed on their site does work on a West Host account and makes setting it up just about as easy as installing the FromMail provided by WH. The thing with all of these programs is that the documentation is in the script itself in the form of comments which means you have to open them up in a plain text editor.

What is a plain text editor? Notepad is a program that comes with Windows and can be used most the time. The one problem with Notepad is if the file is to big Windows well want you to open the file in Wordpad and that is not a plain text editor.

There are two programs that are free that you can download that are plain text editors and in fact are used by programmers for writing scripts. EditPlus and Crimson are their names. I have used both and prefer EditPlus.

I keep hoping that WH well offer an alternative to FormMail but I guess since they have not I should write up a "How To" for using other programs.

Since I am a fan of PHP I thought I should go ahead and add a link to a PHP version of FormMail. I have looked at this program in the past and although I do not use it, it is very user friendly and well supported.
