    Default Some Queries

Hi all. I am considering signing up with WH and have a few queries as research so far has just gotten me all confused. WH seems to be a bit controversial as to the VPS tag on WebHostingtalk but after reading the threads there I understand what it is and think it could be for me. As I understand it, it is not a full VPS in the strict sense but offers customers the option to customise detailed settings such as PHP and Apache.

Although not hard core, I successfully ran a home server on my Mac before transferring to a commercial host and was able to configure Apache, PHP, Imagemagick, GD, Webmin, Webalizer, PHPMyAdmin, MySQL and Gallery2 on the IMac G5 so I am happy with dabbling in these things and have noticed the helpful posts on this forum.

    01) Can users please post a few sample sites for me to browse? My sites are low volume sites (and I mean it - hobby photography) but my current host has really gone down the pan and I will also like a bit more control.

    02) Is there a noticeable difference in speed?

    03) Can I install my own packages like the jhead and jpegtran binaries for imagemagick or are they installed aleady since you offer IM on auto install?

    04) How do the free months work if one chooses quarterly payments?

    05) Is it possible to upload the contents of my site as a zip and unpack or do I have to ftp each file in? I am downloading the site to my local computer as I type ready.

    06) I read somewhere here about a "temp area and waiting for a transfer". Can't I just upload directly or do stuff have to go somehwere first for WH to transfer? What does this temp area mean?

    07) How many sites/clients are hosted on each main server?

    08) Are there any guaranteed service benchmarks such as min ram, bandwidth etc?

    09) Does anyone run a Gallery2 site here?

    10) If I run two sites on one partition and later decide separate them, is it possible to transfer the files on the server without first downloading to my local computer and then reuploading?

    11) Can you users please have a look at my sites http://dakanji.com and http://capture360.net and tell if they look like candidate sites. As I said, they are low volume (although the c360 site allows members and it could change). One thing though is that they are both dynamic and run PHP & MySQL etc. I think the term is LAMP.

    12) Did someone mention a discount code?

    Thanks for your assistance.

Questions 4, 7, 8 and 12 well be better answered if you contact West Host via the Contact page. I doubt they well answer them in the forum. They have never given that information publicly.

You have SSH access to your account so you can do just about anything you want as long as it does not need true root access. There are some files that are owned by root that you can not access. Many things you might want to install might need to be installed in something other then /usr/local. Have a look at Matt's West Host Add On's. It gives some good examples of this.

I have a couple clients that run Gallery2 with no problems on thier WH VPS. The West Host provided ImageMagick works fine with it.

Since you have SSH access to your site it is very easy to upload zipped files and unzip them. You can also move full directories around in this way. I use WinSCP which makes it easy to shuffle things around on the server.

Not sure what you mean by "temp area and waiting for a transfer". You do have a temporary url that WH supplies when you create your account that can be used to access your site while you wait for the DNS to propogate. That is normally no longer then 24 - 48 hours. If you purchase a dedicated IP then you can access your account with that IP.

Pretty much every site I deal with on a WH VPS is dynamic and runs on PHP & MySQL so that is no problem.

    Hello Dayo,

The free months are added to the end of the billing cycle. So if you purchase the Business Pro Plan on a quarterly cycle, you will pay for 3 months and then we add 6 free months at the end of the cycle, which will give you 9 months total.

Currently we do not have any discount codes or coupons with the special we are currently running.

I am not sure if you have already contacted WestHost for your other 2 questions. If you have not, I would be happy to answer them for you as well.

Thanks. I have not been in touch with them yet. Still weighing between this and a "full VPS".

to what? The main speed issue people have is with SSH freezes (where you have to wait for the characters to be echoed), but these seem to have improved recently

I've managed to install every package I have tried with the exception of Pinfo which had a bug and I didn't have time to investigate. You cannot run IRC chat rooms.

If you're happy with linux commands there's no problem. Simply download your favorite SSH client and type away Or you could use rsync if you can run a server on the other host.

The temporary website mentioned by Shawn counts as one of your domains if you have a multiple domain package, but you can delete it if you want.

Westhost claim 27000+ clients and 100 servers. Do the maths...

Westhost do not have an SLA or an uptime guarantee but they do strive and achieve 99.9% uptime. CNet has them listed as a Platinum Performer and you can also visit NetCraft to see some reviews and stats of their uptime.

Westhost do offer a 30-Day Money Back Guarantee so you can cancel your hosting and get a full refund.

Westhost take uptime very seriously. If there was a major outage that was caused by them, they take responsibility in fixing the problem. There have been a few cases where they have offered compensation. Westhost do not have an SLA, so that is up to their discretion if they do.

Sure. Just use SSH (Secure Shell Access) and move the files to another directory on your server or use RSync, WGET or FTP to transfer your files from an external source directly to your server.

They look fine. I steer clear of Flash, but I believe that all you do is upload your swf file. PHP and MySQL are not a problem

Not me although you can always use the affiliate links on WildJoker's, Jala's or my web sites and we'll be eternally grateful. You get the same offers, we get rewarded for our time and effort in replying to these forums.
