I was wondering if anyone had successfully managed to install the VideoLAN video streaming client/server on a VPS? I already have one VPS I use for webhosting services, but we are thinking of purchasing another one for dedicated video streaming use for our centre's activities.

The joint client/server application is available in binary & source form for most flavours of linux:

I have already successfully installed some apps from source on our VPS (PGSQL, CVS), but VLC compilation requires a lot of 3rd party libraries, which would tend to be very hardware dependent (and perhaps require full root access?).

So - possibly not the easiest task on a WestHost VPS, but has anyone managed it?

Thanks,
Alan
