I'm trying to install mod gzip in order to use http compression (which isn't enabled on the westhost older apache install). Th instructions I have are pretty simple and straight forward, except I can't super user to root.
Anyone have any experience in this or will I be forced to request a custom app install and pay just because I can't gain su access?

Here's the basic instructions:
"Login to your server and su to root.
Download the file to a directory of your choice.
wget http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mod-gzip/mod_gzip-

tar -zxvf mod_gzip-

cd mod_gzip-

Open the makefile to edit the path of Apache builder.
pico Makefile

Save and exit the file, Ctrl+X then Y

Lets compile the module, this will NOT affect your current Apache binary.

Everything is fine until I get to this point and I get the following error:

/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs -Wc,-Wall,-O3,-fomit-frame-pointer,-pipe -c mod_gzip.c mod_gzip_debug.c mod_gzip_compress.c -o mod_gzip.so
gcc -DLINUX=22 -DEAPI -DEAPI_MM -O2 -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 -fPIC -DEAPI_MM_CORE_PATH=/var/run/httpd.mm -fpic -DSHARED_MODULE -I/usr/include/apache -Wall,-O3,-fomit-frame-pointer,-pipe -c mod_gzip.c
apxs:Break: Command failed with rc=16777215
make: *** [build] Error 1"

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.
