View Full Version : Format non partitioned HD space -windoz

Hi, I got a rather lame question..hhee. here goes:

I've already got windows xp installed on my 25 G out of 80 G hard drive.
The remaining 55 remains unreclaimed/non formated. So windoz does not recognize it. I tried bootin with the xp cd in it, but it requested me to install xp again on the unformatted harddisk. I dont want to have 2 same OS running, so what would be the best way to reclaim the unformatted 55 Gig space for the one & only OS that's already running. It's currently in FAT 32. I understand that FAT can only format up to 30 G ?

Any advise on how to reclaim it.thanks

Windows isn't my expertise, but here goes . . .

Open Computer Management (Storage | Disk Management)
partition the unused portion of the harddrive
format the portion that you just partitioned

My advice would be to format it using NTFS. In fact, I'd back up and reinstall Windows XP using NTFS also. Well, I guess it depends on how you run your computer. If you're the only one using it, I guess it doesn't make much sense. However, if you have several people using it and you want to keep other folks out of your files, I'd suggest reinstalling using NTFS since it has permissions.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but this website might help.

If that doesn't help try google . . .

Wow, you are spot on. I'm reformatting via the console as mentioned. Still formatting, it should be in the system in no time.thanks Torrin.

Cool! 8) I'm glad you got this working.

I forgot to say this earlier, but for anybody else doing this, make sure you back up your data before partitioning and reformatting. It can be a pretty dangerous procedure. The Microsoft KB article mentions this, but not in big bold print.
