View Full Version : Third Party Email Server MX Question

I want to host a domain with WestHost, but I want to have my email handled by another mail server.

As far as I can tell I just need to go to "DNS Records" in the domain management of the site manager and change the "Main MX Record" to the IP address of the mail server.

Am I thinking correctly? Any other considerations I'm not aware of?

Thanks

Hello Mark,

That is correct except for one thing. You cannot have an IP address within an MX record. What you would do is make an A record called mail.YOURDOMAIN.com that contains the IP address of your mail server. Then insert mail.YOURDOMAIN.com. in the MX record.

If you have any cgi-scripts that are sending email through your domain this will break them. You will need to perform a 'stick host' fix. If this is the case you can send me a PM and I would be happy to do that for you. Let me know if you have any other questions.
