I've been looking through the forums, haven't experienced a 4 hour down time like some of you guys, but just this afternoon, westhost has been down 3 times for 10 minutes each time?

Why?

My site hasn't been down recently, but it was down 2 or 3 times (for short periods) a few weeks ago- and those are just the times that I noticed. Does anyone know of a good tool to monitor uptime? Also, I did a quick search and couldn't find it on the site, does anyone know what uptime WH is now claiming- it used to be 99.9% or something like that I believe...

mine has been down quite a bit recently - not long chunks of time (again, at least what I notice) but 30minutes or so, the really bloody frustrating part is that this has happened about 3 times in the last week alone. Now I'm only looking at the site a few times a day as it's still in development so if I'm only looking at it a few times a day and 20% of those times it's down then chances are that the uptime is pretty ****ed bad. It's getting to the point that westhost is going to have to offer some sort of prorate or upgrade for all this bs to keep me on.

Hello Everyone,

Late Sunday afternoon there was a DOS attack on our network. Some sites could have been down for 40-45 min total before the problem was completely isolated. We are going to be increasing our protection against DOS attacks over the next couple of weeks to help minimize future problems.

2fangs:

What tool did you use to check you site's uptime or downtime?

It seems strange that your site was down every Sundays in
February early in the morning. It seems to me like it is some
sort of automatic and periodic backup or maintenance (rather
than a denial of service (DOS) attack).

It would be interesting to see if you site will be down again next Sunday
morning.

In any case, I think that 99.8% uptime is pretty good. I think that
many of us (myself included) get a skewed sense of reliability when
we read in this forum that so many sites are down.

Will WH use any third party monitoring system in the future like alertra on certain host where they display the percentage of downtime per month...

Hello everyone,

In the rare case that one of our servers does go down we have somebody here all of the time that can restart it. So if it does go down it is just down for a few minutes. As 2fangs and others have seen we have an incredibly high uptime and these outages are virtually nonexistent.

We offer a URL at http://netstatus.westhost.com/ That lists all of our servers and their current status.
