Regarding the outage this morning:

Unfortunately, denial of service attacks cannot be anticipated or easily prevented. We're in close communication with our upstream peering carriers to ensure quick assistance when they do. Often, this is the quickest remedy to an active attack. Additionally, we have strict policies in place that keep our software patch levels current in order to limit our exposure to vulnerabilities. It should be noted that in most cases, a full-scale denial of service attack can take a major provider offline for many hours (occasionally days). We’re pleased with our quick response that allowed us to isolate and resolve the situation in well under an hour.

Regarding the previous outage: An intermittent hardware failure caused the redundant system to come online only intermittently. We’re taking steps to add a triple redundant system to ensure the failover mechanism won’t be the cause of a border outage in the future.

While these two failures were unrelated, we understand the importance of your web and email services, which is why we are constantly taking steps to improve our redundancy and availability so that we can withstand these types of situations more efficiently in the future.

I was not real sure what the term Denial of Service (DoS) ment so did a google search and found these pages that shed some light on the subject.

I had thought that it was something that was a hack attempt on the WestHost servers but was not sure so went searching. It does seem as if we where lucky and that WestHost got us back up fast. One story of this happening states it took on provider 17 hours to get back up.

UPDATE: I just wanted to add that the last link I have listed is a re-cap of an attack that happened and is a very good example of perhaps what many of the users here would like to see from WestHost. This one may go a bit far but it does outline what happened and the steps taken to rectify it.

I well say that this it the fastest reply to a problem posted on the forum i think and I applaude WestHost for that.
