Quick question: if I edit my httpd.conf file, do I need to restart VDS via the control panel to have my changes take effect? Also, what exactly does restarting VDS affect?

Yes.

It will shut down the web service for a few seconds and then everything will be back to normal (hopefully).

If you are SSH'ed in, then run:
# apachectl configtest (which will check the config file for foobars)
# apachectl restart

HTH

Thanks jalal! Although the "hopefully" makes me a little nervous. Have you had any bad experiences with restarting the VDS?

Only if you've made a mistake in the httpd.conf file. Thats why I suggest running the 'apachectl configtest' command first.
