View Full Version : Pasword for folder

I need to create a folder and password protect it so that only members of one group can access it. I did this on the old version of Westhost, but I can't figure out how it is done in 2.0 Site Manager.

Anybody want to give me a clue?

Very easy to do now via WebPassword here is the link in the manual on how to install it.

Then once you have it installed here is the link on how to use it.

P.S. WebPassword is in SiteManager under Site Applications>Tools

I was told by westhost that their plans offered directory password protection for multi users. After reading up in the manual its my understanding that the only password protection is a general single password and user-name to enter the protected directory. Is this correct ?

If that is correct, then with my fishing members area, if one person got ticked off, they could pass out the user name and password, then I would have to change the login info and notify every one of my members of the change. That is much more work than just removing one member.

If this is true, I will have to consider that I might have to cancel my account before I even get my web published. Thats a bummer.

Password protection of a directory is simply done with an .htaccess file that points to a htpasswd file. In the second file you can have as many username and passwords combinations as you like. I think the program I mentioned above well do that for you but not sure since I do not use it. There are others one the net, many free, that are pretty easy to set up on your site using cgi or perl if the one provided by WestHost does not fit your needs.

I want to thank you for your quick reply. I use FrontPage 2000 for publishing me web. I have run into lots of problems using 3rd party scripts with FrontPage. I will talk to support tomorrow before I cancel my account. I really want to stay with this company if, I can get this problem solved.

Thanks again

Is it possible to forward to other folders depending on the username in .htpasswd? Each of my clients have thier own subfolder, and it would be nice to only have one .htpasswd file.

An .htaccess in a subfolder tells the server to look in and .htpasswrd file to check. So you would have one .htpasswd file and then in each sub folder you would have an .htaccess file that points the .htpasswd file.

I think that is the answer to what you are asking.
