Here's a simple question that will, I'm sure, require a complex answer: How do I set up SFTP on my site?

Blackfyr,

What is it you are trying to do? I tried SFTP with my 2.0 account (and WS FTP Pro 8.0), and it worked... The only change I needed to make was to use username as the login name instead of username@domain.com like I need to for "normal" FTP.

Update: According to ftp://ftp.ca.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/INSTALL it requires Open SSL, which you can install using your Site Manager: http://manual.westhost.com/part7.html#openssl

I just realized that I had already installed Open SSL a while back... But the SFTP-server was already installed on my account even before I did this (I found it in /usr/libexec/openssh) The last modified date is a long way in the past, and the creation date of the openssh folder is the date my account was set up...

Unfortunately, that manual appears to be for version 1.0 of the hosting setup and I've been migrated to 2.0. And tthat, again unfortunately, doesn't appear to have OpenSSL as an option. Instead it has SharedSSL.

I would like to get SFTP, SSH & SCP working on my server, but I can't seem to find the ways to install/configure them. I've copied the files into my /usr/bin directory, but I can't figure out what need to be set to allow someone to log in using them.

No that was the 2.0 manual. What hosting package do you have? I don't belive OpenSSL is availble with the starter package.

I only have the starter package. So I guess I'm screwed here.

SFTP (lack thereof) has been my biggest problem with the 2.0 conversion.

Our users don't want to use a webpanel for FTP and I can't seem to find the correct settings for them to access /www/ via FTP as they're accustomed to. I tried changing the FTP path in Site Manager from /ftp/pub/userid to /www/htdocs. However, this seems to be limited to single user access.

Any ideas appreciated.

Blackfyr,

Do you have "sftp-server" in the directory "/usr/libexec/openssh"? I just uninstalled Open SSL using my Site Manager and SFTP is still working.

Is there an updated link here?

It looks like the thread is no longer around. When you see a link with viewtopic.php you can replace it with showthread.php to see if the thread is still around.

It could be the old thread suggested that you create a new user via your Site Manager that had FTP access enabled and set the path to /var/www/html. That would then restrict that new user to files and directories in /var/www/html and above which is the public www root of a default set up.
