View Full Version : Wildcard DNS with Wordpress Mu

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I have a client who is a book publisher. I want to add a blog section for his authors to advertise and discuss their books. Wordpress Mu seems to be the ideal tool, as I don't want to do separate WP installs for each author. So... I want to set things up using the subdomain based version, ie user1.mydomain.com, user2... etc.

I created a subdomain pointer on the site, blog.mydomain.com. This is where the install and "master" version of WP is running. I had WestHost add a wildcard DNS and I looked at my httpd.conf file... it seems to match what was in the WPMU readme. So I log in to WP and add a new user/blog. When I directly access user1.mydomain.com, I am not routed to the new blog, but routed back to the homepage of the site, mydomain.com. Am I missing something in the httpd setup or something in Wordpress? Or is the install into blog.mydomain.com going to cause problems since it's already a subdomain?

If I have to do a separate WP install for each author to make this work, I will... but I'd rather not.

Thanks for any assistance... I really want each author to have his/her own subdomain.

I don't think you can install to subdomain.yourdomain.com if you have installed wordpress mu on the same directory.

What you should do with your environment is perhaps:

user1.blog.yourdomain.com

or use directory instead:

blog.yourdomain.com/user1
