I have two custom installs of WordPress and had a terrible time trying to upgrade to the latest version. For me the symptoms were either:

a) On versions 2.5.0, I could not successfully upgrade to 2.5.1. On the Dashboard, the version would not increment and the reminder to upgrade would never go away.

b) On versions 2.x but pre-2.5.0, the version would unexpectedly increment to 2.5 even though I had not uploaded any new PHP files or had not run the WordPress upgrade script.

After conducting a Web search, it was discovered that this problem is occurring more and more frequently.

Anyone with a custom WordPress install should immediately check to see if there is the presence of an exploit/hack in their files and database. The Web page that I found most helpful is:

http://www.webloggin.com/wordpress-251-upgrade-failure-may-be-linked-to-hackexploit/

The instructions provided on this page worked for me and all my WordPress installs have been fixed.

azrtech,

I don't know if you have gone through the installation instruction on the WordPress site, but if you have, there may be something in there that could help you. The upgrade documentation is found at:
