View Full Version : Port Restrictions

Are there specific ports that are restricted from use with VPS accounts?

I saw a posting regarding restrictions to IRC apps.

I would like to be able to connect use an application that uses the MSN messenger protocol. Are these ports open?

When I try to connect to MSN, I seem to get a connection briefly and then a sock read error almost immediately after. So its either the application or as I suspect, some ports are not open.

Thank You

I can't remember the exact details but yes some ports are not open. They are normally lower port numbers. You best bet would be to send a Support Ticket off to WH via the Contact Us page and ask them if the port you are trying to access is available.

Dear Client,

If you have a dedicated IP account you can use pretty much any port above 1024. Ports below that number are restricted unless they have standard services running on them (FTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, Etc...)

Just because ports are "useable" doesn't mean they are open.

For example. Lets say I want to run Darwin Streaming Server on port 8554.
[~]$ telnet dwinans.whsites.net 8554
telnet: connect to address Connection refused

There is not a service running on that port listening for connections. Once we configure Darwin to use that port and start the service, everything is peachy.

[/etc/rc.d/init.d]$ ./darwinstreamingserver start
Starting streamingadminserver.pl: [ OK ]
[/etc/rc.d/init.d]$ telnet dwinans.whsites.net 8554
Connected to dwinans.whsites.net.
