Dear Quentin,

This can be done using a .htaccess file. There is a tool that can be used to create this file for you at:

http://www.iwebtool.com/htaccess_url_rewrite

Once you have the content for the .htaccess file, you would place that in the same directory as your page (name the file .htaccess) and then users would go to something like domain.com/whatever/file or domain.com/whatever-file (depending on the separator specified) and they'd be redirected to the long URL.

There is a lot that can be done via .htaccess files and these types of things can be done manually, however, if you're new to creating .htaccess files and syntax used, this tool makes things a little nicer.

There are so many of these services around, but the Grand Daddy of them all is http://www.tinyurl.com. Other services you can consider are listed in the Open Directory (http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosted_Components_and_Services/Redirects/)
