Hey all

I have a small non-commercial site for cribbage players. This is my first time running a site which actually gets regular visitors. Any comments would be appreciated: http://dailycribbagehand.org

Well I am not a cribbage player so your front page is very cryptic. :) I am not sure what your reasons for the site are. Is it for a local club or are you looking to attract players form around the world? It might help to give some details of the intent of the site on the front page. What is the site for. Who is it for. Stuff like that. You have your site links at the bottom of the page in plain text links but it might help to create a navigation system for the site that is on the top or side of page. Most folks look for site link there and not at the bottom of the page. You don't want your users to have to scroll down to get to navigate the site.

You need a doctype, meta description tag at the very least for the SEs to know what your page is about. And content! :)

1. Add a proper xhtml DOCTYPE declaration (before your head tag):
Transitional (a little more forgiving of errors):

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
2. Add Meta description tag (after head)

<meta name="description" content="Put a description of your site using your keyword phrase here. No more than 135-155 characters as the SEs don't show more.">
3. Add <h1>Your On Page Title</1>

4. Add original content: at least 400 words for SE spider food. You can split this up: about 250 words before your cribbage hand images. Make this a nice, friendly intro to your site and what it's about.

5. Fresh content for your home page without you having to do a thing but paste in code: Add an RSS feed from Google or Yahoo using "cribbage," cribbage tournaments" or whatever key phrase you want.

6. Ditch the Firefox and Opera links: What do they have to do with cribbage? You aren't going to make $ on these. If you want to keep them, put in a rel="nofollow" inside the href tag.

7. Instead of linking out to cribbage.org on your home page, link to an interior page on your site. Write original content, at least 300 words, preferably more. Link to cribbage.org from this page.

Be greedy with your home page real estate: keep it for yourself. The SEs aren't going to reward you for being "nice." Just the opposite, in fact.
